TORONTO, Ontario — January 13, 2026 — Leads & Copy — Cineplex reported $67.0 million in box office revenue for December 2025, exceeding the prior year’s figures.
The Canadian entertainment and media company saw its December box office surpass the previous year, driven by a strong film slate, demand for premium formats, and international content. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 had the largest opening for a horror film released in December.
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the Avatar franchise, led the month. Approximately 90% of the film’s box office revenue came from premium experiences. Family and animated titles also contributed to the results, with Zootopia 2 surpassing the box office performance of the original film.
Cineplex’s focus on international content was highlighted by Dhurandhar, which became the highest-grossing Hindi language film in North America. Cineplex generated over 30% of the film’s North American box office. The series finale of Stranger Things was presented on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, selling out at 97% of the locations screening the event.
Cineplex Pictures also performed strongly in December. The Housemaid achieved box office and critical success, becoming Lionsgate’s highest-grossing release from 2025. Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution demonstrated the growing demand for anime and event-based programming.
